What do the Guilinese usually do, what they
eat, where for shopping
Market/Street
Zheng Yang Walking Street
Zheng Yang Street is the most
hip and popular shopping district in Guilin.
The main entrance to Zheng Yang Street
is located near the Jie Fang Qiao bus-stop and this is where taxis drop off
visitors. Zheng Yang Lu is a Walking street, which means that no vehicles are
allowed on it making it a safe place to stroll and do a bit of window shopping.
The street's many shops offer fashions, art, tea, local handicrafts, hair
salons, bars, and nightclubs. There are also many restaurants and small snack
stands that sell Guilin's
famous local cuisine. It is the place to see and be seen in Guilin.
Little
Hong Kong
There's this underground market called 'little Hong Kong' where they sell clothing and other stuff, like
gadgets and hardware thingies. Not that interesting from my point of view, but
worth the visit underground. There are countless street markets where they sell
all sorts of stuff, from tea to necklaces.
If you want something cheap or 50 feet shoes,
it a great street for you.
West Street
It is the place to head. Walk along the cobbled street and
you'll find many things to buy. You can watch silk being woven or silver being
hammered into shape. Just remember to bargain hard and you'll have a great
time!
Leisure and sports
Mountain Climbing
Yao Mountain: it’s the highest mountain in the
area and, apparently, you have amazing views from the top, looking at the
weird shaped mountains and the city. Apparently because when I went it was
cloudy and foggy and I couldn’t see a damn thing. You go up on a cable car and
to go down you can either choose to use the cable car again or just use a slide.
Yangshuo Climbing: Climbers come from all
around China
for the varied rock climbing and rappelling experiences offered by the many
limestone formations around Yangshuo. The area offers hundreds of routes,
from single to multi-pitch routes at all levels. While karsts can even be found
and hiked within the town itself, there are several climbing companies that
will take you further afield and where you can get equipment and advice on what
level of karst to climb.
Yangshuo Cycling
The
best way to explore the area is by bicycle. Virtually any street corner in
downtown Yangshuo will rent bicycles by the hour or for the day. Hostels will
also lend you a map by which you can navigate the city and the surrounding
area. Start with the town itself. Reminiscent of a sleepy mountain ski village,
it's filled with small restaurants and bars, all packed next to each other on
the streets and the town's small river walk. Crisscrossed with small bridges, you’ll
find coffee shops, stores selling everything from curios to handcrafted
scarves, and parks mostly filled with elderly Chinese talking, walking,
practicing tai chi, and playing board games.
Eating
Guilin Rice Noodles Taking pride of place as the most
popular local snack (or breakfast, lunch or dinner) in Guilin, Rice Noodles is pliable but strong,
fragrant and mellow, and cheap. Guilin
rice noodles can probably be found
within 100m of any
town or city area.
Oil Tea
Oil Tea is a distinctive flavor of Guilin, Most Outsiders are not
used to drink it. Every county of Guilin has people who regularly drink oil tea;
however the most famous oil tea drinkers are the Yao people of Gongcheng.
Guilin Chilli Paste
Guilin Chilli Paste, one of three treasures of Guilin, is salable not only to the native but
for the abroad for its particular flavor. The main material for Guilin Chilli
Paste are lobster sauce, garlic and Sanhua Wine, hot, fragrant and tasteful.
Hot Pot
Yangshuo Beer Fish
Yangshuo
Beer Fish is Yangshuo's most famous dish. It is made from fresh Li River carp.
The fresh fish is fried in a wok along with beer, hot and green peppers,
garlic, onions, celery, tomatoes, soy, and sugar. Visitors are amazed at how
delicious the fish's skin is and how fresh and tender the meat is. Eating
Yangshuo's beer fish will be an unforgettable culinary experience.
